Finally Coming True

    Feb 6, 2022 | by The Fellowship

As I sit in my cozy Katy home, I continue to be in awe of a God who loves me and takes care of every detail of my life.  Even though things have not always been easy or predictable, the Lord has continually been with me and shown me a way that is bigger and better than anything I could ask for!

As a teenager, I felt a calling to become a social worker to help take care of children in need. I vividly remember family members talking me out of this dream with practical reasons -- such as low pay and unending heartache. With encouragement from my family, I then decided to become a registered nurse.

After graduation, I landed a job in the operating room, and the OR became my home away from home for more than 35 years. But I continued to have a love for children and have been blessed to help take care of many over the years during surgery!  However, the desire to do more for children has always stayed with me!

I recently went to work one day and was informed during a staff meeting of some changes coming to our surgery center and my job. I was not in agreement with these changes and so on a whim, I decided to apply for a school nurse position. Because my granddaughter recently started school, I thought it would be neat to be part of her school district which is just north of Katy.  That way I would always be informed about the educational system she is part of!

The school nurse position I applied for listed a bachelor’s degree as a requirement.  I went to a three-year school to become a fully certified RN and received a diploma … but not a degree. Deciding I had nothing to lose, I prayed and applied anyhow.  Within just a day or two after applying, I was asked to come in for an interview! When I mentioned not having a bachelor’s degree, the interviewer told me that my experience and knowledge meant more to them than a degree!

My second interview followed a few days later.  I was asked if my preference was high school, middle school or elementary.  When I responded that it was elementary, an interview was set up on the spot.

As I began walking the halls of the elementary school to get to the interview, my heart felt so full at the prospect of taking care of these children and the ways I could show Christ’s love to them. The principal and I hit it off immediately.  Right away, it felt like I was centered in God’s will.

Within a week of applying, I was offered the job where I will be serving children in kindergarten through 5th grade!  And the salary they proposed is not based on entry level, but rather on all the years of service that I accrued in my other nursing jobs.  In fact, it is much more generous than I ever dreamed!  Even though my recent employer came back to me with an alternate job proposal, God has made it abundantly clear that He is opening an incredible new door for me … and the school is located only 20 minutes from my home.

It feels like my teenage dream is finally coming true in a slightly different way! Maybe through something I say or do, a child will experience Christ’s love and His care for them.  To be even a small part of that will bless me beyond measure!  My heart overflows with gratitude and joy for what He has provided in answer to my prayers!
