Why are You Still Standing There?

January 05, 2021

And while they were gazing into heaven as he went,
behold, two men stood by them in white robes,
and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand
looking into heaven?
Acts 1:10

This is probably on my top ten list of favorite verses in all of scripture, but it probably does not make many lists of popular verses. I love the scene – the disciples had just asked Jesus if He was going to restore the kingdom to Israel and Jesus response … ‘It is not for you to know when BUT you will receive power to be my witnesses all across the earth.’ Then Jesus ascends into heaven and the disciples are standing there looking up.

Why are you still standing there!?!

I am sympathetic to the disciples - they had been through a lot over the last three years, and especially in the last 40 or so days. You can appreciate the fact that they were just standing there watching Jesus ascend into heaven, even long after He disappeared. Sometimes we all need a kick in the pants to get us jumpstarted. To move us from standing there with our mouth open to moving again – sometimes we all need a reset.

The reasons are different for each of us, but a conversation with ourselves in the mirror will often reveal where things have gone wrong, gotten off track and we will desire to reset our life – not to the way it was, but to the way it was supposed to be.

Thankfully God is in the resetting business! Thankfully, all those who have called upon Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior have been given the Holy Spirt and the power He brings. God gives us the power of the Holy Spirit to help us reset our life!

Why are you still standing there!?!

You have everything you need to reset your life, no matter where you are in life. You have a God who loves you, Jesus Christ died for you, and you have the Holy Spirit living inside you and empowering your life.

Why are you still standing there!?!

Make today the day you stop standing ... and start moving. Make today the day you begin … again!
